EVIAN THONON GAILLARD
As soccer's popularity continues to grow in the United States, much of the attention is focused on The World Cup, the English, Spanish, Italian and German premier leagues and America's top professional league Major League Soccer (MLS). However, great soccer is played in many other countries around the world.
Bloody Confused by Chuck Culpepper follows a Portsmouth during an entire English Premier League (EPL) season as they struggled against relegation. After reading it, I became more interested in following some of the lesser teams as it can be quite exciting going into the later stages as teams at both the top and bottom are fighting for position.
I became aware of Evian Thonon Galillard (EVIAN TG) through Aurelien Telle, who owns Alta Restaurant & Wine Bar in Lenox, MA. He is from Evian, France and an avid soccer fan. He was quite proud when Evian TG was relegated up to France's Ligue 1 for the the first time, 2011-2012 season. However, they are struggling to avoid being relegated down this season, 2012-2013. Click on the EVIAN TG link for their league standing. As of March 1, 2013, they are in 17th place and one point below the 16th place finish necessary to stay in Ligue 1.
One reason EVIAN TG is struggling this year is that several of the players helped the team perform so well in their first Ligue 1season were sold. This often happens when better players are in the spotlight more than they were in a lower league.
EVIAN TG has an interesting History, which is typical of the many teams in professional soccer who struggle to reach the premier league in their countries.
EVIAN TG and the French Lique 1 is also featured on League Play.

Evian TG Upsets Powerful Paris Saint -Germain
UPDATED APR 18, 2013 11:42 AM ET
PARIS (AP)
Paris Saint-Germain crashed out of the French Cup quarterfinals on Wednesday after losing a shootout to Evian in which Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thiago Silva missed penalties.
Evian scored all three of its penalties to win 3-1 in the shootout after the match ended 1-1 to progress to the semifinals.
Ibrahimovic's spot kick was saved by Bertrand Laquait, while Thiago Silva struck the crossbar. PSG forward Ezequiel Lavezzi scored with his penalty but Cedric Barbosa converted Evian's winner.
PSG's hopes of winning the double are over, although the big-spending club is still on course for the French league title. Evian is three points above the relegation zone.
Javier Pastore gave PSG an eighth-minute lead, but Evian leveled in the 43rd when an unmarked Saber Khelifa prodded in from close range after a counterattack.
PSG midfielder Thiago Motta was sent off two minutes from the end of extra time for a foul on Barbosa.
Bordeaux is also through after winning 3-2 at second-division club Lens. The topflight club was behind for nearly 50 minutes after goalkeeper Cedric Carrasso's own goal.
But Gregory Sertic leveled and Cheick Diabate scored late double. Zakarya Bergdich pulled one back for Lens in stoppage time.
Bordeaux midfielder Ludovic Obraniak had a spot kick saved.
