"Coach Me Like a Man, Treat Me Like a Woman"
Mia Hamm's comment is taken from former US Woman's National Team's coach Tony DiCicco's book "Catch Them Being Good: Everything You Need to Know to Successfully Coach Girls" co-atthored with Colleen Hacker and Charles Salzberg.
Pre 1999
The first women’s football match to be recorded in England was in 1895 between a northern and a southern team. In the early 20th century, women’s football attracted huge crowds to watch teams like Dick, Kerr Ladies team from a mutations factory in Preston play in matches to raise money for charity.
On Boxing Day 1920 a crowd of 53,000 was recorded between Dick, Kerr Ladies and St, Helen’s Ladies at Good Park, Everton. However, in 1921, the FA banned women from playing on Football League grounds, which seriously set back the development and status of women’s football in England. The ban was lifted in 1972.
FA 1921 Resolution: “Complaints having been made as to football being player by women, the council feel impelled to express their strong opinion that the game of football is quite unsuitable for females and ought not to be encouraged.
The FA took over the running of women’s football in 1993.
