Understanding Goalkeeping

How Does A Goalkeeper Stay Awake During A  Game?

This question, which has been asked in many different ways, is reason enough to explain goalkeeping.  Tony DiCicco, coach of the United States' 1999 Women's World Cup champions and director of NSCAA's Goalkeeping Academy has commented that goalkeeping is 80% off the ball, which is when they are not making saves.

The exceptional play of many of the goalkeepers during the 2014 World Cup in Brazil  has highlighted their importance to teams.

Understanding Goalkeeping will go into all aspects of goalkeeping.

Goalkeeper Training-Then and Now

Tony DiCicco indicated that anyone who has the following can be trained to be a good goalkeeper:

  • Desire to play the position
  • Excellent athletic ability
  • Mental toughness
Goalkeeper training has advanced considerably since my career began in 1948 at the age of fourteen, having never seen a game or soccer ball.
